These tide tables are 2 years out of date.
I'm sorry to see that the 1998 tide tables have slipped to 959,464th in sales rank. I'm sure this will improve as more and more people have an oportunity to read this fine book.

Deception in War: The Art of the Bluff, the Value of Deceit, and the Most Thrilling Episodes of Cunning in Military History, from the Trojan Horse to the Gulf War
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (25 October, 2001)
Author: Jon Latimer
Average review score:

Engaging and lively, this is the best book on the subject
As an armchair historian I was intrigued when I saw this book on a topic not widely written on or understood in western military thinking. Covering deception from ancient history to the 20th century (and beyond) Latimer examines the theory and practice of deception in war.

Dividing the book into sections dealing with air, land, naval, tactical and operational deception and then providing a detailed look at how deception works at each level has proved an excellent way to break down this complex topic. Each chapter is also full of colorful examples of deception efforts in history (eg. the British in WW2 observed the Germans building a intricate wooden mock-up airfield. On the day of its completion they sent over a lone Lancaster and dropped a large wooden bomb on it!). The lessons from history serve to illustrate each point Latimer brings up and keep the book lively and interesting.

Latimer has excelled at making this a very accesabile book which while it provides the detail a military buff wants is interesting enough to capture readers with a more general interest. I was genuinely disapointed when I completed the book, wishing there was more to read!

An excellent book!
If you're looking for a basic book about the Gulf War and its many aspects, you couldn't go wrong with this one. Just the sort of high quality and good writing you would expect from Military History Magazine!

Desert Storm: A Forgotten War
Published in Paperback by Praeger Publishers (30 December, 1998)
Authors: Alberto Bin, Richard Hill, and Archer Jones
Average review score:

Very Well Done
Very well written. Starts a little slow with much preliminary
but fascinating information about the international politics
leading up to the war. After that starts a day by day account of the war and most major battles. I especially liked the many
behind the scenes personal interviews with pilots, Iraqi officers, tank commanders, etc. about their experiences,
Many " stories never told" . It was riveting. Very well researched, unbiased & hard to put down.

Desert Victory: The War for Kuwait
Published in Paperback by United States Naval Inst. (September, 1991)
Author: Norman Friedman
Average review score:

Friedman scores again!
Friedman is one of America's best military autohrs and historians. His FIFTY YEAR WAR is the best account of the strategies and politics of the cold war. This DESERT VICTORY is an excellent, though somewhat short, review of the Kuwait war.

I'm rather hoping Friedman writes an account of last month's Iraq war ASAP, it is sure to be the best of the dozens of books sure to come out of the war.

Very Good Book Documenting the Reservist Role in Gulf War
As a tentmate, I find his accounts very accurate. He brings a human element to the reservist role activated from private practice and serving in the armed forces during operation desert storm. The EVAC hospital located in northern Saudi Arabia was important in the ground war as well as reconstruction afterwards with the care of the POW. The book is light and entertaining. It is a modern day "MASH" delineating the real life experiences of a field doctor serving in the army.

Dilmun and its Gulf Neighbours
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (April, 1998)
Author: Harriet E. W. Crawford
Average review score:

The best book on Dilmun and Magan!
In this book, professor Crawford provides an excellent, up-to-date report on what is presently known about the ancient society of Dilmun and others in the Persian Gulf area. Three areas are reported upon: North-western Arabia, Bahrain (Dilmun), and Oman (Magan). The author exhaustively reports on archaeological findings (including architecture, burial items, pottery, and more), analyzing their significance, but avoiding any broad speculation.

I can't say enough about this book. If you want to know what is presently known about Dilmun and Magan, but wish to avoid the extreme speculation (if not outright guesswork) of many books, then this book is for you!

Discovering the Geology of Baja California: Six Hikes on the Southern Gulf Coast
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (February, 2004)
Author: Markes E. Johnson
Average review score:

A wonderful walk through Baja's geologic past.
This book is like a nice walk with a good friend who has a talent for telling great stories. You go along for the pleasantness of the walk, and find yourself transported right into the middle of the story. Here you are, some forty feet above the current level of the sea, standing on a shelf of land that contains the perfectly preserved remains of a coral reef. In another area, some 260 feet above sea level you come across a fossilized seabed jammed with the shells of thousands of oysters. Ancient shark teeth litter the ground on top of a 130-foot high mesa. Your friend walks on a few yards and, with infectious enthusiasm, reads the next chapter of the story to you.

Six hikes around the Punta Chivato area on Baja's Gulf coast introduce you to the fascinating story of Baja's geologic history. If you love Baja, love geology, or just love a nice hike, you'll LOVE this book!

Emotional Aftermath of the Persian Gulf War: Veterans, Families, Communities, and Nations
Published in Hardcover by Amer Psychiatric Pr (May, 1996)
Authors: Robert J. Ursano and Ann E. Norwood
Average review score:

Ver well done, non biased, broad overview of complex issues
Very well done volume, thoughtful, not a "flash in the pan", both good science and good clinical care. One of the few volumes I have ever seen to address the care of wounded and the issues of CBW in historical context, as well as POWs and the stress on families. Comprehensive.
